about

Phil Whelan - Presenter, RTHK Radio 3, Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a city of crowds, pace, politics, bright lights, energy and…..life. Asia’s very own “who dares wins” anthill. There is, quite simply nothing like it anywhere! Anybody who has lived in Hong Kong for a period of time will tell you that they would actually find it very hard to live elsewhere. “Why?”, they are asked. The answer is always vague, but more an expression of “I just love it but can’t explain why”. It’s actually very simple; this small city at the foot of China has an immense heart. Once you venture beyond the busy streets of the Central business district, wander down a small street in Soho or even look up once or twice above street level, you will see one of several clubs and bars that are the de facto homes of a small community of eclectic, world class jazz musicians. Over the past ten years this group has welcomed newcomers form all over the globe. Needless to say, they have no plans to leave. Hong Kong has played host to many of the worlds most accomplished jazz musicians who, to a man, have spoken in glowing terms of the backing and support they have been given by members of the Hong Kong Jazz family.

Pianist and Producer Jason Cheng has really taken Hong Kong’s live music scene by storm with his boundless energy, technique, originality and a passion for bringing musicians together. This CD is a testament to that spirit. It represents the work of this community, celebrates Christmas and proves that giving is often better than receiving.
